After years of coaching hundreds of leaders at various levels across different industries and collaborating with teams to enhance their effectiveness, we noticed patterns in how and why people get in their own way from having the results they desire.
Then, when we launched our Show Up as a Leader podcast in the fall of 2020, we started asking every guest to share a self-limiting story they still tell themselves and how they move beyond it to show up as leaders in their lives.
The responses to this question aligned with what we saw in our coaching and consulting work, so we decided to examine the data more closely to learn what we could.
From a detailed analysis of 250 leaders across industries (85 leader interviews and coaching data from 165 leaders), we gained greater insight into the following:
- The seven core Faulty Programs and their “cousins” that derail progress and effectiveness
- The most common improvement goals leaders strive for—and what’s getting in their way
- How the relationship between leaders’ goals and their Faulty Programs impact their ability to lead
- The single behavior leaders see as critical to creating more human workplaces
